Follow the Fynbos

Abundant endemic species of fynbos in the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve bring the full bounty of the Cape Floral Kingdom to your flora-filled stay, where spa treatments, hikes, 4×4 nature drives, horse-riding expeditions and fresh food produce make this a retreat that quenches the soul.

At Grootbos Forest Lodge, a scenic three hours from Cape Town, you’ll be surrounded by 760 species of fynbos and a pristine Milkwood forest. Visit the Bloom wellness center for an outdoor spa treatment – in the forest or garden – and enjoy the unique aroma of locally sourced products, many made from indigenous plants found on the property.

This eco-wilderness retreat is set within 2,500 hectares of untouched landscape, and is a member of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World. Its proximity to Gansbaai means you can visit Dyer Island by boat to view the ‘Marine Big Five’: Cape fur seals, penguins, Great White sharks, dolphins, and the Southern Right whales that visit from June to December.

FAQs.

Grootbos is within an easy 3 hour drive from Cape Town along a very scenic coastal route (a faster alternative route is possible).

It is located in the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest, but most biodiverse of the world’s vegetation types. The region was declared a UNESCO heritage site in 2014 and is considered a hotspot in terms of conservation by conservationists the world over. Includes 9000 different species of which 760 are found in Grootbos. Known as ‘fynbos’ (fine brush in Dutch) because of the fine leave structure. Additionally, Grootbos is located near Gansbaai for boat-trips to Dyer Island where the Marine Big 5 can be viewed. (Cape fur seals, penguins, great white sharks, dolphins and the Southern right whales from June to December)

Children of all ages welcome at Garden Lodge (no children under 12 at Forest Lodge)
